The yellow fox dangled his feet over the wing of the tornado. Sonic had half a suspicion he was wiggling his toes inside the toes of his shoes, but he couldn’t see it.
“It’s fun. And you need to know how to handle them in case you ever take one out of someone’s hands anyway.” Tails chuckled. “Now, lean down and balance it on the trash can.”
For a second, he thought about putting it down and running away. He could. He didn’t have to do this… but was that any way to treat Tails after all the little fox had done for him? Tails had followed him through thick and thin. He could learn this one thing. It wasn’t like he’d ever be obligated to use it…
Then he slid his fingers across and pushed the safety.
Sonic adjusted the position of it so the crosshairs were just above Eggman’s bald head. He checked his hold on everything; he had no idea how much kick it would have. He let out a deep breath, but found the moment to squeeze had gone, and the crosshairs hadn’t been moved as much as he expected.
He expected a kick. He expected to feel different somehow. All he heard was two cracks in rapid succession. The balloon was gone. So he’d hit it, then. He didn’t want to feel proud, but he found he couldn’t help it.
Sonic reached over and slid the safety back on, then he pulled the rifle away and looked at it, end to end.
Sonic nodded, biting his lip.
“How do you reload this thing?”
I chose the word "reload."
Those of you who came here becuase of me know that this piece was based on my own experiences. After a childhood of pacifism and many years with reservations about it, my stepfather taught me how to shoot his 22 this weekend.
I made about 2/3rds of my shots, some of them using the wrong hand/eye combo, and that's not excluding the first two I missed.
Then I posted a rambling journal entry about it making jokes about how I'm now living up to Shadow the Hedgehog, and it lead to a comment about how I can no longer be the Sonic of my group of friends... 'cause you know, in Shadow the Hedgehog, he tells Shad how to swap weapons, then says, "Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead with one of those things."
The fandom acted like it was super offensive when Sonic picked up a sword in Sonic and the Black Knight. But you know... I can't see Sonic having an arbitrary, static sense of morality. If he has a hard and fast rule, he has it for a reason. And when that reason goes away? I think he'd drop it.
Case in point: Sonic and Mario at the Olympic Games: youtu.be/7grGQ1VSz4E (SPOILER ALERT)
Consider this story a prequel to that.
Also, in the words of my bro Jon, AWW SKEET SKEET SKEET SKEET
I'd wanted to sit on this a few more days and edit again but my family are a bunch of idiots and I want to be able to leave at the drop of a hat.
Heck, how I'd react to shooting a gun for the first time.
I really love how he tried keeping Tails from making him shoot it, since that would make anyone question Tails' innocence. How many guns has Tails used??
