The world below me passes by like fire,
A flame I have no power to control.
Oblivious to all that I desire,
Its sunny days will never make me whole.
It’s been a while since I denied my soul,
No longer do I doubt I should exist.
To find my place, I need a clearer goal.
Another purpose needs to top my list.
And now I think I’ve finally found the gist
By watching that sad creature down below.
As she evolves, I see what I have missed.
Now I need only find out where to go.
The others grow and change, and so must I,
Or else my dream of living free shall die.

I've been meaning to do something about Mega Mewtwo ever since the announcement... but the prompt from #Rising-Artists made it all come together.

This week's prompt at Rising Artists was "Evolution." I knew the moment I saw the prompt I was going to end up writing something about Mewtwo from Pokemon. For those of you who aren't Pokemaniacs, Mewtwo was one of the very first Pokemon introduced in the original game, and his character in the anime is one of the best developed. Recently, Nintendo gave him an evolution and a new movie... but the movie Mewtwo is a woman, and the one I liked was implied to have been written out of existence.

The character I loved all those years ago was plagued by guilt and fear that he didn't deserve to exist. He longed to be superior to everything, as he was told he was, and yet at the same time he only wanted to belong, to be able to be free. I think that character would take some measure of comfort in the idea that he could evolve like a common Ampharos or Absol, assuming he even still exists. I decided to write about the moment when he realizes he can be a normal Pokemon, not just a clone, if only he can evolve, so that evolution in the Pokemon sense becomes a symbol from his evolution a wild animal to a civilized, self-aware adult.

The format is a Spenserian sonnet.

Sadly, even though I meant it to be part of the challenge, I forgot to actually submit it to the group. So... that was a total waste of time. Or maybe it wasn't.

Poor Mewtwo. His creation and existence was always so tragic. I just know him from the first Pokémon movie, but his story always moved me and is the reason I loved that movie. This is very moving.
